So, what exactly is a cannabis strain?

Some of you may have heard of Jean Guy,  Wedding Crasher, or the famous Pineapple Express, but do you know what makes these strains unique? 

The scientific name for what is commonly referred to as “strain” is “chemovar” which is a chemically distinct entity within a plant. 

A cannabis strain or chemovar is determined by a combination of its cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids among others. The combination of these chemical compounds is what makes a chemovar unique.

Did you know that the cannabis plan has over 450 chemical compounds? Over 100 of these chemical compounds have been identified as cannabinoids. Some cannabinoids are intoxicating like THC, some non-intoxicating like CBD, and others are just inactive.

The other compounds include terpenes and flavonoids which affect the aroma and flavour of the strain, but also impact the effects experienced by the strain or chemovar. The synergistic relationship between these compounds is what has been called the “entourage effect” discovered by Dr. Russo, a board-certified neurologist and psychopharmacology researcher.
